NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION CLIVEDEN SOFA BY KINDEL FURNITURE COMPANY
Part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Collection, the Cliveden Sofa is considered an American Rococo masterpiece. Attributed to the Philadelphia workshop of Thomas Affleck, circa 1763-1771, the sofa was acquired by Benjamin Chew from Governor John Penn for his Cliveden Mansion in Germantown, Pennsylvania, where it is still the focal point of the drawing room.
With its commitment to the highest standard of quality, Kindel Furniture Company was selected as Licensee to the National Trust for Historic Preservation to make a faithful reproduction of this sofa. Made in the English style, where Thomas Afflect received his training, this reproduction retains all the design elements of the original. The sofa features a high arched back with a masterful combination of French Rococo scroll (interlocking C-scroll and S-scroll motifs) and Chinese and Gothic arch ornamentation, sweeping scrolled arms, highly ornamented exposed mahogany seat
rail and carved Marlborough legs on raised plinths. As with the original, the sofa is upholstered in a neutral yellow silk and extensively trimmed with brass tacks along the edges of the back, the arm rests and seat rail. With its bold and commanding scale, this masterfully designed sofa demands attention in the most discriminating home. This very rare Kindel reproduction, circa 1985, is no longer produced and only a limited number were ever made.
Height 38″; Length 88″; Overall Depth 38 3/4″; Seat Depth 24″.
